Incident control - Course ref: ER1
Course objectives:
At the end of the course delegates will have an understanding of the management issues involved in handling an emergency to satisfactorily mitigate the consequences to people, property and the environment. Delegates will have experienced a realistic scenario in a tabletop exercise and been involved in decision making exercises.
Who should attend:
This course is of particular importance to middle and higher managers who will be responsible for the tactical and strategic management of an emergency. These managers will normally manage the incident from an incident room, or emergency centre, rather than at the actual scene itself.

- Principles of incident control
- The location of incident rooms
- The layout of incident rooms
- Setting up and opening an incident room
- Gathering information
- Sourcing equipment and resources
- Key players and their roles
- Roles of the different emergency services
- Initial risk assessment
- Dynamic risk assessing
- Decision making exercises
- Human behaviour in an emergency
- Determining tactical and strategic actions
- The domino principle
- Controlling the adrenalin rush.
Day 2
- Dynamic risk assessing continued
- On and off-site evacuation procedures
- Emergency communication procedures
- Decision making exercises continued
- Recording of events
- Liaising with the media
- Dealing with relatives arriving on site
- Securing information and evidence
- Running down and closing an incident room
- Tabletop realistic exercise
- End of course test.
At times during the course delegates are put under pressure to simulate incident stress levels. Realistic visual and audio effects are used during the tabletop exercise to give delegates the feeling of handling a real emergency.
Course tutor: Gordon Gledson MIFireE, CFIOSH, MAE. Gordon was a senior officer in the UK Fire Service and served as an instructor and lecturer at the world famous Fire Service College in England.
Competency testing: Multiple choice test and tutor assessment.
