Incident control refresher - Course ref: ER4
Course objectives:
The course is designed to refresh the main areas of incident management and to give delegates the opportunity to practise their leadership skills in a realistic tabletop exercise.
Who should attend:
This course is suitable for incident controllers or managers who have undergone initial training for the role. The course content follows the lines of the initial incident control course but involves more discussion on the topics to allow delegates to refresh and progress their knowledge and more deeply understand the subjects. It is recommended that incident controllers and managers attend this course annually.

- Setting up and opening an incident room
- Gathering information
- Sourcing equipment and resources
- Initial risk assessment
- Dynamic risk assessing
- Determining tactical and strategic actions
- Recording of events
- Liaising with the media
- Dealing with relatives arriving on site
- Securing information and evidence
- Running down and closing an incident room
- Tabletop realistic exercise
- End of course test.
At times during the course delegates are put under pressure to simulate incident stress levels. Realistic visual and audio effects are used during the tabletop exercise to give delegates the feeling of handling a real emergency.
Course tutor: Gordon Gledson MIFireE, FIOSH, RSP, MAE. Gordon was a senior officer in the UK Fire Service and served as an instructor and lecturer at the world famous Fire Service College in England.
Competency testing: Multiple choice test.
Documentation: Training summary provided for company records, delegates receive course workbook, individual certificate and feedback form.
